Reflection
A 21-speed bike is an ideal picture of what working together is all about. Sprockets, derailleur’s, shifters, control cables and chains work together (hopefully!) in perfect unison. The result is a smooth transition uphill and down, one that gives endurance, fitness benefits and sustained power. Now, that’s a ride!
Sometimes, however, one part of the system gets out of adjustment or breaks. When that happens, obviously the whole mechanism comes to an abrupt stop. And that’s pretty much what happened to the early church. Often in Scripture we’re taught about the church and how this body is intended to function smoothly as each person takes a part. This groups of believers faced just such a dilemma and solved the problem in a creative and God-designed way.
First, they organized themselves. After agreeing on a plan, they divided the workload. At last, responsible people stepped up to the tasks at hand. A difficult process? Not really, unless just one part of the body fails in its contribution. Note that rumblings, discontent, and complaining occur if we don’t all carry our weight.
Collect for the Day
Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might, now and in all eternity. Amen.
