Reflection

When you decided to become a Christian and follow Christ, did you sacrifice or give up anything in your life – maybe a habit, a group of friends or an attitude? In the time you’ve been a Christian, have you ever faced any suffering or mistreatment because of your faith – perhaps taunting or derogatory jokes aimed your way? Nobody said being a Christian would be easy, right?

Jesus wanted his followers to understand one thing: Just as suffering, rejection and sacrifice were part of Jesus’ life, they will also likely be part of the believer’s life. Jesus gave a three part explanation as to what it means to follow Him. First, a person must deny himself – that is, shift his focus away from himself and toward Christ and his ministry. Second, a person must pick up his cross, demonstrating a willingness to suffer and die for the Lord’s sake, if necessary. Third, a person must follow Christ, patterning his life, actions, and attitude after Jesus’.

Collect for the Day

Almighty Father, who in your great mercy gladdened the disciples with the sight of the risen Lord: give us such knowledge of his presence with us, that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life and serve you continually in righteousness and truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
