Reading (Psalm 7)

Psalm 7

Reflection

This psalm is called the Song of the Slandered Saint. The psalm reveals that when the innocent saint’s integrity is questioned, his only defense is God. The occasion for the psalm is given in the superscription. David had been slandered by one named Cush the Benjamite. David opens with a positive statement about putting his trust in the Lord. Next he asks for deliverance from a powerful enemy. In the end, though, David makes an abrupt transition as he bursts into a song of praise to Jehovah for deliverance from slanderous men.

Collect for the Day

Faithful God, who strengthened Monica, the mother of Augustine, with wisdom, and through her patient endurance encouraged him to seek after you: give us the will to persist in prayer that those who stray from you may be brought to faith in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
