Reading (Psalm 11)

Psalm 11

Reflection

The theme of Psalm 11 is that God’s providence watches most carefully over those who put their trust in Him. This psalm of David does not mention the circumstances under which it was composed. It is obvious, however, that David was in deep distress and the most likely period of the psalmist’s life that gave rise to such distress was either his residence in the court of Saul, when the king was provoked to jealousy, or when David, as king himself, lived under the duress of his son Absalom’s rebellion.

We see the theme focused upon in verse one where David put his trust fully in the LORD. In a time of distress and persecution, David had put his trust in the right place. His friends had given him advice that no one who has put his trust in the Lord could follow. Flee as a bird to your mountain is probably a proverbial expression for seeking shelter and safety. David cannot run away from his problems; he can only trust in the Lord.

Collect for the Day

Merciful Lord, who turned Augustine from his sins to be a faithful bishop and teacher: grant that we may follow him in penitence and discipline till our restless hearts find their rest in you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
