Reflection

In 1 Timothy 4 we read: "Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons . . . who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth." The Essenes of the first century felt marriage was only necessary for the preservation of the human race and thus forbade it to their followers. The Bible does not teach such a drastic policy. The Bible says “marriage” and “meats” were created by God and are not to be refused. So often we place restrictions on ourselves that have nothing to do with holy living or with pleasing God. Turn to God's Word and develop a prayerful relationship with Him. Then you will know what His will is for your life and how you can serve Him to the utmost.

Collect for the Day

Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever. Amen.
