Reflection

John offers the definitive statement about God: "He is light, and in Him is no darkness at all." Here are the two great symbols, light and darkness, that suggest moral purity and evil. John says, literally, that there is not even one bit of darkness in God. So it is only when we walk in the light that we have fellowship with God. The correct way of dealing with sin is not to deny it, which John states makes God a liar, but to acknowledge it and repent. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just. He forgives us and cleanses us from all unrighteousness. All of us must review our lives daily and examine our thoughts and actions according to the standards God has set for us in His Word. By living in the light of Christ we will become more and more like Him and experience His presence in ways that bring us increased wisdom and joy.

Collect for the Day

Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever. Amen.
