Reflection
In our Epistle reading today we find that if believers are those who live righteously and demonstrate love for others then, by contrast, those who persist in hatred are not true believers. John uses the supreme example of sacrificial love to show what love is ultimately: that Christ laid down His life for us. Here we see the vicarious nature of the atonement; Christ died in our place and suffered the punishment of our sins for us. This is the basis for the obligation of Christian love.
One of the best ways we can honor the sacrificial death of Jesus is to demonstrate true love for others. Is there someone in your church who needs your encouragement? Do you know someone who would be thrilled if you offered them a home cooked meal? Is there a faith-based community outreach that is in need of volunteers? Showing love for others in the name of the Author of love will bring both you and the recipient of your kindness great joy and satisfaction.
Collect for the Day
Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever. Amen.
