Reflection

In verse 5 of our Epistle reading today Paul implores the church to "have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus." This command is also found in 1 Corinthians 2:16 where he says that we are to have the "the mind of Christ.” Here Paul exhorts the saints at Philippi to allow that mind to dominate and control their lives. When this is done, we will not 1. assert our own virtues; 2. defend our own rights; 3. promote our own selfish interests; or 4. live for ourselves. Verse 5 introduces one of the most wonderful mysteries of the Scriptures, what is called the doctrine of the kenosis. This doctrine of our Lord’s self-emptying is used as an example and as an illustration of that lowliness of mind which should be the pattern for all followers of Christ. Paul is stating accepted facts to enforce the obvious duties of humility and unselfish consideration we should have of others.

Collect for the Day

Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
