Reflection

In today's Old Testament passage we find that while God's judgment for Israel is imminent He still gives hope to the people if they will only turn from their sinfulness and live according to His commands. Throughout Scripture we find numerous instances of God's anger toward those who mistreat the poor and are unjust to the righteous. Here we find similar condemnation as the prophet notes the sins of the judges and others in power who have "trampled" upon the innocent.

But then, in verse 14, we find a simple lesson for doing what is right in God's eyes and, in turn, receiving His favor: "Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said." Such simple admonishments. Yet, so often, it is hard for us to put our anger and grievances aside to do what is right. Always remember, though, that God sees both our just and unjust deeds and His expectations for us, the members of His Kingdom, are the same as those He had for His people, the nation of Israel. Strive to do what is right and always show kindness toward others in the name of Jesus.

Collect for the Day

Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
