Reflection
The Philippians had sent a love offering and Paul’s cup of joy overflowed. He also acknowledged, "You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity." Paul traveled far and communication was slow. The Philippians did not lack love, but the opportunity to express it. They had not forgotten Paul and they had not failed him. He wanted to make this clear to them.
Then in verse 11 we see that Paul’s commendation was not a complaint in disguise. He was not hinting for another gift. He didn't need gifts to rejoice. Paul’s joy came from within, not from outward circumstances or pleasures. He admits that he didn't always have this viewpoint but had learned it through long, hard experience. He makes it clear that now he was totally independent of others because he was completely reliant upon God. Paul’s satisfaction and sufficiency were in Christ alone 2 Corinthians 12:9. This is truly the mind and heart that we as believers should have and maintain. Our lives should be utterly fulfilled because we belong to Him and He dwells within us.
Collect for the Day
Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
