Reading (Psalm 16)

Psalm 16

Reflection

This psalm is known as a Michtam of David. Similar Psalms include 56, 58, 59, and 60. The word Michtam is generally understood to mean "hidden," indicating the depth of a doctrinal and spiritual truth that is a mystery. Such an interpretation fits well with this psalm.

We are not left to human interpreters to unlock the secrets of this mystery, however. According to the Apostle Peter (Acts 2:25) and the Apostle Paul (Acts 13:35), Psalm 16 relates to Christ and the assurance of salvation he offers. It also expresses His feeling of human emotion when, during His sufferings and death, he called on God to preserve Him.

At the end of this psalm we are joyfully promised that we will not be left in grave but will live with Christ forever. Jesus was the first to trod the path from death to life but he will certainly not be the last, for He promised every believer eternal life.

Collect of the Day

Everlasting God, whose servant Hilary steadfastly confessed your Son Jesus Christ to be both human and divine: grant us his gentle courtesy to bring to all the message of redemption in the incarnate Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
