Reading (Psalm 55)

Psalm 55

Reflection

In this psalm, David does what any believer who loves God would do when distressed; he comes boldly to the throne of grace. The usual occasion ascribed to this psalm is Absalom’s rebellion. But the intent of the psalm may go beyond this situation and point to the suffering of our Lord at the hand of his familiar apostle, the betrayer Judas. One cannot escape noticing the similarities between this aspect of the psalmist’s life and that of his Great Descendant, Jesus Christ. As the psalm concludes, David suggests that when betrayed by those whom we have trusted, the wise course of action is to unburden ourselves to the Lord because He will sustain us regardless of the circumstances.

Collect for the Day

Eternal God, who enriched your Church with the learning and holiness of your servant Thomas Aquinas: give to all who seek you a humble mind and a pure heart that they may know your Son Jesus Christ as the way, the truth and the life; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
