Reflection

Lord Acton, a noted scholar in the nineteenth century, coined a famous phrase that is often repeated today: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Looking back at the miserable history of Israel’s monarchy, we see this principle in action. With such power to demand money and command subjects comes kingly pride. Almost all of Israel’s leaders yielded to the alluring trappings of power. Even the godly King David occasionally forgot that he was under God’s authority. Such failures from power-intoxicated leaders always produce unhappiness among the populace.

You can learn a lot  from this chapter of Israel’s history. Remember that while humans are corrupted by power, God is not. His ability to do anything and everything is rooted in His inherent goodness. He will never act selfishly or ruthlessly. He rules the world with absolute fairness and kindness. Thus, we can have full confidence that He will govern our lives in ways that are good.

Be extremely careful that you don’t get tripped up by pride if are in a position of prominence or power. Depend on His wisdom. Rely on His guidance. Pray for wisdom to avoid an ego trip of pride, no matter how great your success.

Collect for the Day

Eternal God, who made Benedict a wise master in the school of your service and a guide to many called into community to follow the rule of Christ: grant that we may put your love before all else and seek with joy the way of your commandments; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
