Reflection

If we attempt to look at suffering in terms of fairness or unfairness, we’ll become frustrated very quickly. No matter how much we suffer in life, we will encounter people who suffer even more. Some do bear hardships that the rest of us can’t imagine. But we must stay focused on the great truth that no matter our situation, God understands fully how much we hurt. He remains the One who will put an end to all grief and injustice. He gave us His own Son, who suffered an agonizing death beyond the experience of any human. He remains our comfort when all else is empty and cold.

God charges us with a responsibility to follow Christ’s example in assisting others in their times of suffering. We may not be able to prevent sorrows from happening, but we can be the agents of healing made possible through the incredible work of Christ. Praise God not only for the fact that He suffered and gave His life for us but also that He understands our suffering, having experienced it Himself.

Collect for the Day

God of our pilgrimage, you have led us to the living water: refresh and sustain us as we go forward on our journey, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
