Reflection
One of the most common accusations people hurl at each other is “You don’t know what it’s like”. Yet, sadly, whether it’s physical suffering or personal grief, we too often underestimate the ability of others to sympathize with us. Jesus, though, has no trouble empathizing with suffering people. He was subject to so much suffering during His short time on earth that he is called “man of sorrows”.
Part of God’s plan for Christians is to patiently endure suffering. Jesus modeled this endurance throughout His life – especially during the events leading up to His crucifixion. Facing vicious taunts, insults, physical abuse and other forms of persecution, Jesus refused to retaliate. Instead He placed himself in God’s hands, recognizing that the Father is the ultimate source of justice. When we face persecution or suffering today, we too should have the confidence that He will eventually make things right.
Collect for the Day
Creator God, you made us all in your image: may we discern you in all that we see, and serve you in all that we do; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
