Reflection

When was the last time you worshiped an idol? If you’re like most people, when you hear the word idol, you probably think of weird-looking statues and pagan ceremonies – the kind of stuff you might see in a late night movie. As a result, you probably feel safe in saying, “Never”! Sometimes idols are hard to spot because they’re not always obvious. In fact, many things that become idols like money, exercise and sports, to name a few, are not necessarily bad in and of themselves. Money is not only necessary in today’s world, it can also be used to help others. Exercise is recommended for good health. Sports provide great opportunities for relaxation and fun. However, when these things begin to consume the majority of our time, energy and devotion we’re in danger of committing idolatry.

A person doesn’t have to be rich to treat money as an idol. Take this test: If you are not following God with all your heart, discover what it is you lack. You may be surprised to find an idol blocking the path. Determine to remove whatever is in the way so that you can serve God wholeheartedly. Ask the Lord to help you identify any idols in your life and to give you the strength to rid yourself of them.

Collect for the Day

God our redeemer, who through the folly of the cross taught your martyr Justin the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ: remove from us every kind of error that we, like him, may be firmly grounded in the faith, and make your name known to all peoples; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
