Reflection

Some medical experts say the tendency to become an alcoholic is hereditary. Children of alcoholics potentially face the same struggles their parents and grandparents did because of their genetic makeup. Many people who wrestle with problems like addiction often blame their parents and excuse their own lack of personal responsibility.

Yet God judges each person individually, parent and child alike. Whether good or bad, each person receives God’s fair treatment. Sure, we may suffer the effects of the sins committed by those who came before us. But God doesn’t punish us for somebody else’s actions. And we shouldn’t use their behavior as an excuse for our misdeeds. Look to your Heavenly Father for guidance and live according to His perfect will. Only then will you have the peace that can only come from righteous living.

Collect for the Day

O God, the strength of all those who put their trust in you, mercifully accept our prayers and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you, grant us the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
