Reflection

Concern about pollution, global warming and rain forest destruction grabs headlines these days. Yet we hear relatively little about the spiritual pollution that threatens countless lives. Every day, our culture suffers the consequences of our sinful actions.

Thousands of years ago, Israel witnessed the slow, steady destruction of their own land. It was directly caused by generations of sinful behavior. But God promised a stunning restoration of the land. The nation needed to be cleansed from years of blatant disobedience to God. So God sent the Israelites into captivity for seventy years in order to purify the land.

The same way that God heals and restores the land, he restores individuals. Yes, even those who have experienced total degradation. When God unleashes his healing power, dry, dusty hearts bubble up with the Spirit of God. Fruit grows abundantly and there is lush and beautiful growth.

Collect for the Day

Most merciful redeemer, who gave to your bishop Richard a love of learning, a zeal for souls and a devotion to the poor: grant that, encouraged by his example, we may know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit are alive and reign, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
