Reflection

How does Old Testament history apply to us? Just like the Israelites, too often North American Christians rely on their vast wealth. Isn’t it odd that in a culture where food is so plentiful, eating disorders are also common? For many, food and drink become the central controlling force in life. God’s gifts, on the other hand, are taken for granted. Where is the gratitude? Also, like the Israelites, we can sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that religious activity done for God can replace spiritual intimacy with Him. This is a great mistake! God doesn’t want our empty actions. He wants our hearts.

You won’t find ultimate security or self-worth eating a lot or a little, having a good time on the weekend or only going to church on Sunday. Look for your security in a God who loves you and wants you to love Him. Pray that you will find your security in an intimate relationship with Him. Ask Him to make you less worried about your own comfort and more sensitive to those in need.

Collect for the Day

O Lord, from whom all good things come: grant to us your humble servants, that by your holy inspiration we may think those things that are good, and by your merciful guiding may perform the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
