Reflection
In the last few decades, many Christians in North America have chosen to become part of the political process. Some argue that this is a healthy trend – that believers elected to positions of influence can be salt and light in a decaying, darkening culture. Others believe that spending so much money, time and effort to bring about political change is a waste. Their argument is that nations as a whole will never change until individual hearts are transformed spiritually.
Both arguments have merit, but each side needs to remember the timeless truth that God is our ultimate Ruler. He is the only One who deserves full confidence and allegiance. The temptation is for us to put our hope in whatever political party or candidate who claims to represent “traditional values.” We get worked up over particular causes, as if a single legislative act can bring about godliness in our nation. We tend to rely heavily on economic forecasts and reports. Each of these is important, but the greater truth is that God is in control and we need to trust Him and nothing else. Pray that you and other believers would place the hope for justice in the hands of the Lord instead of in world leaders and governments.
Collect for the Day
Almighty God, you have broken the tyranny of sin and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts whereby we call you Father: give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that we and all creation may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
