Reflection

Few hurts in life can match those inflicted by a cruel tongue. A supervisor’s mean-spirited putdown in front of other workers. A taunting remark made at a dinner party to someone going through a difficult time. David knew the pain of a cutting remark. And he often referred to those who used such language as prideful. Proud people – whether individuals or groups or governments – think the best way to flex their muscles is to put others down. Proud people, to paraphrase Christian author C. S. Lewis, are always looking down on everything and everybody. Because of this, they can’t see the God who is high above them.

David refused to give in to the temptation of pride. Instead of relying on himself and treating others unkindly he put his trust in God. “I know the LORD will surely help”, he exclaimed (v. 12). While the proud were praising themselves and pursuing others with deadly words and force, David praised the Lord. Have you ever felt discouraged, singled out or persecuted for being a Christian? Are you facing adversity or feeling helpless? Are you sensing you can’t resolve a pressing problem? Know that you can call on the Lord. Say with David, “You are my God! Listen, O LORD, to my cries for mercy”.

Collect for the Day

God our redeemer, who called your servant Boniface to preach the gospel among the German people and to build up your Church in holiness: grant that we may preserve in our hearts that faith which he taught with his words and sealed with his blood, and profess it in lives dedicated to your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
