Reflection

Notice in our Gospel reading that when Jesus went out to pray, it was very early in the morning. He did this before any other activities could distract Him or interfere with the work He had for the day. Second, this account comes after His encounter with demonic forces. After this experience He needed the spiritual refreshment that can only come through fellowship with His Heavenly Father. Third, He went to a solitary place. He did not want interruptions from His followers or from those who sought Him for healing.

This pattern is important for us to recognize in order to have an effective prayer life. Set aside a dedicated time each day for prayer when you won't be distracted by your responsibilities, your phone, or other people. Also, when you're going through a difficult time such as pressures at work, temptations you're dealing with, or hurtful attitudes from others, it's especially important to spend extra time in prayer because only then will you be able to effectively face your challenges.

Collect for the Day

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
