Reflection

You’ve probably heard the adage “God helps those who help themselves”. Maybe you’ve even thought that’s a verse right out of God’s Word. Not true. Actually, the Bible teaches just the opposite: God helps those who in their helplessness call out to Him.

Humans are mortal and could die at any time. In a moment all our plans can come to an end. We control very little of what happens in the world, even while we live. On the other hand God created and regulates the entire universe. In addition to being the Creator, He is more faithful than a best friend. He keeps every promise forever.

This is illustrated beautifully in the Gospels where, time and again, Jesus helped people who could not help themselves. Sick people who could not recuperate became well; blind people saw for the first time; demons that trapped people in despair and destruction were cast out. Today God is waiting and willing to help you. Acknowledge that you can’t help yourself and come to Him. He is infinitely patient and ever willing to listen.

Collect for the Day

O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
