Reflection

Nothing is beyond God’s capability. This is a principle we need to recognize every day. Any calamity we face forces us to make a decision. Do we worry ourselves sick with the thought that we will be left shattered and hopeless? Do we try to take the world on our shoulders and solve our own problems? Or do we fall back on the promises of God and trust Him to lead us out of the darkness?

We all encounter situations where we are powerless to help. Maybe we have seen a loved one suffer from an incurable disease. Maybe we have lost our home in a fire. We’ve all asked ourselves, “What can I do”? Sometimes our only option is prayer. Thankfully, prayer is the best option to have. Even when we don’t exactly know what to ask for, we can still pray for the Lord’s will to be done. It is important to remember that God hears and answers our prayers – often when don’t even realize it. As a result, we are never helpless, no matter how hopeless a situation may seem.

Collect for the Day

God of compassion and love, by whose grace your servant Josephine Butler followed in the way of your Son in caring for those in need: help us like her to work with strength for the restoration of all to the dignity and freedom of those created in your image; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
