Reflection

In today's Gospel reading we see that the seventy-two are thrilled that even demons are subject to them. Jesus sees the disciples’ success as a foretaste of the complete defeat of Satan. The cross would signal Satan’s final downfall and his being cast into the lake of fire only follows naturally, though separated by a larger time interval. Christ’s disciples had tremendous privileges for which countless others before them longed. However, their greatest joy, as we read, was to be regarding their own salvation.

Collect for the Day

God, the giver of life, whose Holy Spirit wells up within your Church: by the Spirit’s gifts equip us to live the gospel of Christ and make us eager to do your will, that we may share with the whole creation the joys of eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
