Reflection

In the first two gospels, Levi is referred to as Matthew. Levi was a tax collector who worked for the Roman government and was no doubt quite wealthy. Upon Jesus’ call of "Follow me," however, he left everything behind - and probably lost his job as a result. His commitment to Christ was complete and final. Later, Levi’s efforts to bring his fellow tax collectors to faith in Christ was an occasion for the Pharisees to criticize Jesus and His disciples for dining with such sinners. Jesus replied that only those who are sick realize their need of a physician. The Pharisees were in need, but refused to acknowledge it.

Collect for the Day

Almighty God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you: pour your love into our hearts and draw us to yourself, and so bring us at last to your heavenly city where we shall see you face to face; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
