Reflection

The Pharisees were very careful to maintain outward cleanliness but were unconcerned about the inside. Jesus probably ate without washing on purpose to point this out to his host. Notice how boldly Jesus spoke in today's Gospel reading. Several times he uttered "woes" to those he dined with, and He even called them fools and "full of greed and wickedness." Jesus was just over thirty and this did not sit well with the older men in attendance. Jesus rightly accused them of many terrible sins, especially hindering others from being saved by their actions and arrogance. We need to be aware, as believers, that what we say and how we conduct ourselves has a tremendously positive or negative impact on unbelievers and seekers.

Collect for the Day

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
