Reflection

The first time Job responded to God in 40:3-5 with silence and his hand over his mouth ("Job said to the Lord: 'Who am I to answer you? I did speak once or twice, but never again.'"). Now he humbly repents, having seen God’s power, wisdom, and love fully demonstrated. His only possible response is to confess that he spoke foolishly and without understanding. Before, his knowledge of God was second-hand, but now it is first-hand; his own personal experience. All of his questions have not been answered, but they no longer are burning issues. Job’s repentance and submission, appropriately, ends the poetic section of the book that bears his name.

Collect for the Day

Most glorious and holy God, whose servant Hildegard, strong in the faith, was caught up in the vision of your heavenly courts: by the breath of your Spirit open our eyes to glimpse your glory and our lips to sing your praises with all the angels; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
